Jenny Roberts Millinery Shares Her SS17 Trends

Jenny Roberts Millinery shares her top trends for SS17 and a long with what she expect's you are likely to see at major race meets throughout the summer.

At Jenny Roberts Millinery, we take direction and inspiration from this seasons trends, Summer 2017 brought lots of exciting colours, textures and scope for creating really exciting headwear.

Silhouettes are bold, with the ‘Cold Shoulder,’ trend picking up force anything extreme works for a sleeve; ruffles, flutes, cropped, bunched or oversized.  Hemlines take a similar lead and the more uneven and unusual the better.

The romantic colour palette with the odd bold contrast works well with our 6 favourite trends, ‘Botanicals,’ ‘Complicated Braids,’ ‘Plastic Chic,’ ‘Animal Effects,’ ‘Intricate Techniques’ and finally ‘Rough and Raw.’  We have pulled together a moodboard and some detail about each and how we have interpreted them into our millinery this season.

Botanicals & Florals

We just love florals; they bring colour, vibrancy and movement to any look and are also a great option for the races to make you stand out from the crowd.  We make all our own flowers petal by petal in materials including silk, tweed and even leather.  Think monochrome flowers, jungle prints, the reflections of nature, bold graphic flowers, translucent leaves and make your outfit come to life.

Complicated Braids

Extreme texture is a great trend for hats, we love working with different braids and straws to make a design come to life.  We have taken inspiration from crossover lines, contrasting fibres and even incorporated laser cut trims.

Plastic Chic

Shiny trims on hats are all the fashion with artificial sparkle from patent leather and laser cut plastics. We created these patent and clear plastic flowers from heated up bottles and finished them with black Swarovski stamens.

Animal Effects

Animal is making a statement again, this time interpreted as tribal type prints.  We are loving the leopard print sinamay, playing with coloured leathers, and using feathers to rock the cheeta vibe.

Intricate Techniques

We are loving the folds, curves, delicate detail, ruches, fans and lace effect; the more complicated the better.  These hats speak for themselves and need no further input so go plain and understated with the dress and let the hat take centre stage.

Rough and Raw

This trend is all about the feel of fabrics; tweeds, weaves, crumpled fabrics, mottled leathers, woven plastics and checks, these will all add interest to the surface of a hat and make everyone want to touch your headwear!
