The Making Of The Spode Blue Italian Hat

Jenny Roberts started creating this wonderful piece of art in March, it fits perfectly with the Goodwood theme that I just had to wear it to mark the 200th anniversary of the beautiful Spode Blue Italian design.

Below Jenny takes us through the design process.

We researched the design of lots of different pieces of the blue Italian collection, looking at the shapes of plates, tea pots and handles. We then broke down the core design into all the different elements by tracing over prints of the design.

From this we came up with 3 design options, an abstract design using the outer elements and shapes from the circular plate design, a loop design using the rings of the plate intertwined and the final design which we later choose which was the plate design incorporated into a double blocked headpiece.

We then set about working out how best to realise the design into a original but recognizable blue Italian hat. We created the form of the hat in sinamay initially and traced the design onto silk which we then draped over the base to ensure the scale worked.

We then set about with the Glasgow Institute of Art and Centre for Advanced Textiles in transferring the plate design onto duchess silk which would later reflect the essence of the shine of pottery onto the finished hat.

We were thrilled with the colour matching quality to the blue Italian range of blues. We then set about draping the fabric over the brim and stitching it together before matching up a separate piece for the crown.

Intricate beading including bugle, seed, Swarovski's, pearls and bullion wire which were then added by my college Marie whose beading expertise and attention to detail bought to life the wonderful blue Italian design in 3D.

From here a separate piece of fabric was stiffened and loops were created to add interest to the front of the hat to provide direction without taking away from the design and hand made flowers were created using French flower making tools.

The blue Italian design was added to the underside of the brim and flowers were attached along with hand cut feathers to give movement. The design is secured using a hand made and painted wired headband and a couture lining finishes the hat off.

The design has taken over 200 hours to complete and uses over 2,000 hand stitched beads and was a absolute joy to create.
